TMI alert: but hey, healing isn’t always tidy!
And sometimes it can be downright hilarious…in a twisted sort of way.
My first two children were delivered by cesarean section. Thanks to my high-risk specialist, my next two were vaginal deliveries.
That third birth came with its fair share of challenges — one being hemorrhoids so bad I couldn’t sit for weeks without one of those donut pillows.
And here’s the kicker… those little annoyances never left.
After years of putting up with them, I finally decided to ask my doctor about removal. She referred me to a proctologist.
When I arrived for my appointment, the receptionist asked for my insurance card. As I handed it over, I realized I’d given her my dental card.
“Oh, wait!” I said. “Wrong card — we’re looking at a different part of my body than my teeth.”
A few seconds later, she looked up, chuckled, and said, “I just got that.”
Since all the paperwork had been filled out in advance, the doctor knew why I was there — but in true doc fashion, he came in, sat down, and said, “So, tell me what’s going on.”
With a half-grin, I replied, “Well… when I delivered my daughter, I ended up with massive hemorrhoids that have been with me for decades years. I finally decided to get over my embarrassment and see if something can be done about them.”
He smiled, and gave a slight nod of his head. I’m pretty sure there was a silent snicker in there.
And honestly — is there any delicate way to talk about that?
Humor may not cure everything, but when we’re willing to lean into it — even in life’s messiest moments — it can help us heal.
Your turn:
When was the last time you found yourself laughing in the middle of something completely uncomfortable, messy, or hard?
