\u201cDon\u2019t squish the bread.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
All you moms out there know exactly<\/i> what I\u2019m talking about.<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
We\u2019ve conveyed those four words in all types of tones, though usually the command is projected with emphatic, if not menacing undertones.<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
You\u2019ll go without lunch<\/span><\/i> for a week<\/i> or Can\u2019t cut the crusts off of crushed bread, Kiddo<\/i>.<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
I\u2019m afraid I can\u2019t relate to the latter, nor can my children.<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
Who in this blessed world has time for cutting the crust off bread<\/i>?<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
Besides, there are starving<\/i> people<\/i>\u2026<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
Grocery shopping was notoriously a family event in our house, and \u201cDon\u2019t squish the bread\u201d was a weekly directive.<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
\u201cIs that like the eleventh commandment?\u201d Fave once asked.<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
Squishing the bread is akin to a cardinal sin; it\u2019s like culinary sacrilege at its best.<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
So, I know what you\u2019re thinking: What on God\u2019s green earth does squishing the bread have to do with writing?<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
Well, first of all it involves a story.<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
Second of all, a writer\u2019s words are her bread and butter, food for the soul, or any other clich\u00e9 you can think of.<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
And today I realized that I have spent the past week squashing some of my most important words, squeezed the very life out of them.<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
I\u2019m talking about the kind of crushing that leaves that slice of wholesomeness so flattened it looks and feels like a gummy wad of nearly dried-up glue.<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
It\u2019s totally useless\u2026<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
Last week I won a $250 pay-it-forward giveaway from Chicken of the Sea and Recipe Renovator, and then I decided to extend the #100YearsOfGood by doubling the donations.<\/span><\/a><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
I posted the links on Google and Pinterest and Facebook and Instagram and I asked you to share and share and share.<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
AND YOU DID! This post has one of my highest click rates of all time!<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
But after a week of watching that count go up and up, I began to wonder why no one was submitting nominations. Not one. Zilch<\/i>. NADA<\/i><\/b>.<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
So I did a bit of sleuthing today and realized my grave, grave mistakes.<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
1) <\/span><\/span>I had not tested the bit-ly link for the Facebook post.<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
2) <\/span><\/span>As if that weren\u2019t bad enough, I discovered that the e-mail link on The Five Facets website<\/span><\/a> was broken.

<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
Heaven only knows how many of you have submitted entries to this giveaway!<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
O\u2026M\u2026G\u2026 even worse, how many of you have written for information in the six months<\/i> since this blog went live?!<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
Talk about EPIC FAIL.<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
Falling flat on one\u2019s face.<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
Suppressing any enthusiasm I might have drummed up.<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
I squashed those perfectly shaped writing resources and our connection with Olympic-caliber and perfect form.<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
Ugh<\/span><\/i>\u2026<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
Fortunately for me, we writers tend to be the forgiving kind, and fixing the little problem is almost as easy as hitting a few delete buttons.<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
I can also turn my little mishap into a post and offer a few gentle reminders for all of my writing friends out there.<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
One of the best ways to be successful is to pay attention to those habits and suggestions of those people you deem successful.<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
Below are a few of the tips I\u2019ve culled from writers who seem to have made a place for themselves in The Writer\u2019s Kingdom.<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
Eleven Commandments from The (Great) Writer\u2019s Codebook<\/span><\/b><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\n
<\/span>1) <\/span><\/span>Write because you love words<\/span><\/b>more than you need riches.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
<\/span>2) <\/span><\/span>Write about what you know<\/span><\/b>; it\u2019s comfortable and it makes you look smart and savvy.<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span>3) <\/span><\/span>Write about what you don\u2019t know<\/span><\/b>; it\u2019s a humble reminder that we don\u2019t know everything and it makes everyone else feel good about what they do know.<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span>4) <\/span><\/span>The world is your oyster-ly muse<\/span><\/b>. You can write about anything from tampons to that cat who just stuck his paw in your morning cup o\u2019 joe.<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span>5) <\/span><\/span>Find your voice<\/span><\/b>, that sweet spot that reflects your own cadence and flair and style. Personal style lends credibility and sense when you write about feminine plugs and that favorite feline.<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span>6) <\/span><\/span>Use your active voice; <\/span><\/b>passive voice puts your readers to sleep and begins to feel like a sharp stick poking her in the eye.<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span>7) <\/span><\/span>Put your ass in that seat<\/span><\/b>and your phone in another room.<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span>8) <\/span><\/span>Set a timer everything<\/span><\/b> from showering and social media to writing.<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span>9) <\/span><\/span>Get up and MOVE<\/span><\/b>; your fingers aren\u2019t the only part of your body that needs exercise.<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span>10) <\/span><\/span>Patience is your new best friend<\/span><\/b>. With it you won\u2019t hit that Submit<\/i>button when there are errors awaiting your attention. Without it you just might go stark raving mad before you receive that coveted acceptance letter.<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
And the eleventh commandment?<\/span><\/div>\n
It\u2019s actually one of the first things we learn and one of the last so many of us heed.<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
It\u2019s so important that it\u2019s worth amending The Writer\u2019s Ten Commandments.<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
Here\u2019s hoping The Writer\u2019s Eleventh Commandment will now stand out as the most important<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
Are you ready?<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n

PROOF. EVERYTHING.<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/div>\n
If you have to, pay your kids or the neighborhood\u2019s five-year-old tech-genius to test your links.<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
There ya have it, Folks.<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
