{"id":379539,"date":"2013-07-30T20:23:00","date_gmt":"2013-07-30T20:23:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/staging.annahelizabeth.com\/index.php\/2013\/07\/30\/on-courage-wisdom-and-triumph\/"},"modified":"2013-07-30T20:23:00","modified_gmt":"2013-07-30T20:23:00","slug":"on-courage-wisdom-and-triumph","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging.annahelizabeth.com\/index.php\/2013\/07\/30\/on-courage-wisdom-and-triumph\/","title":{"rendered":"On Courage, Wisdom, and Triumph"},"content":{"rendered":"<div dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: \"Verdana\",\"sans-serif\";\">I try to refrain from writing a great deal about my children for two specific reasons.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: \"Verdana\",\"sans-serif\";\">Firstly, I don\u2019t want to be one of those parents who whip out the six-foot accordion file of wallet photos when asked about my cherubs.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: \"Verdana\",\"sans-serif\";\">And secondly, they have surpassed that age of \u201cLook, MOM! TAKE A PICTURE OF ME!\u201d but haven\u2019t yet come back around to being okay with being shared with the world.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: \"Verdana\",\"sans-serif\";\">You know how it is, how we mothers sometimes say the most <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">embarrassing<\/i> things or can be so <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">uncool<\/i>.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: \"Verdana\",\"sans-serif\";\">But here\u2019s the thing.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: \"Verdana\",\"sans-serif\";\">I enjoy sharing my kids.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: \"Verdana\",\"sans-serif\";\">Warren and I are so blessed to have three well-rounded children who are kind and smart and funny.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\"><span style=\"font-family: \"Verdana\",\"sans-serif\";\">Thank you, Genetics, for giving them their father\u2019s quick wit and sense of humor<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-family: \"Verdana\",\"sans-serif\";\">.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: \"Verdana\",\"sans-serif\";\">Not only do my three share those traits that your children likely have, too, they have each survived a lifetime of uncertainty.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: \"Verdana\",\"sans-serif\";\">Not knowing when the next argument is going to erupt between Mom and Dad.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: \"Verdana\",\"sans-serif\";\">Wondering if they were going to be like the overwhelming majority of their peers, Children of Divorce, and contemplating where they would live or if they\u2019d have to choose one parent over the other.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: \"Verdana\",\"sans-serif\";\">I\u2019d surmise there were days when they wondered if it was going to be a happy or sad day for Mom.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: \"Verdana\",\"sans-serif\";\">It stands to reason that they\u2019ve likely pondered the question of why their Dad cheated.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: \"Verdana\",\"sans-serif\";\">And I\u2019m guessing they might have questioned the universe at some time or another, as to whether or not they would follow in Depression\u2019s or Infidelity\u2019s footsteps.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: \"Verdana\",\"sans-serif\";\">Those are the marks of Courage, Journeyers, getting up every single day not knowing what is going to follow.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: \"Verdana\",\"sans-serif\";\">I am a mother of many mantras.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: \"Verdana\",\"sans-serif\";\">I have said to my children more times than I can count, \u201cYou three are lucky to have two parents who love you, who are involved, who care and are willing to put aside their differences for your sakes. That said, we are blessed to have each of you, because you\u2019ve taken everything we\u2019ve offered, you\u2019ve run with it, and applied it beautifully into your lives.\u201d<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: \"Verdana\",\"sans-serif\";\">Not that we haven\u2019t had our challenges, trust me.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: \"Verdana\",\"sans-serif\";\">We\u2019ve talked and begged and pleaded and banged our fists on tables.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: \"Verdana\",\"sans-serif\";\">But to set the record straight, Warren is the level-headed, logical, methodical kind of man, so I\u2019ve been the one to occasionally beg and plead and bang fists.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: \"Verdana\",\"sans-serif\";\">We\u2019ve sat in principal\u2019s offices and I once found myself standing, in my underwear mind you, in front of an unknown teenager that I found in our house at four a.m.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: \"Verdana\",\"sans-serif\";\">That\u2019s an image every person alive wishes to erase from her memory bank.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: \"Verdana\",\"sans-serif\";\">And let me tell you it takes a great deal of bravery not to bury one\u2019s head beneath a pillow and never come out after enduring something as embarrassing as <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">that<\/i>.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: \"Verdana\",\"sans-serif\";\">Courage is about not letting our mistakes, misgivings, and misfortunes define who we are.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: \"Verdana\",\"sans-serif\";\">Courage and I go way back.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: \"Verdana\",\"sans-serif\";\">Every year, when <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">The Wizard of Oz<\/i> would come to the TV screen, my mom would make Chef Boyardee pizzas and root beer floats, and we\u2019d all eat at the end tables in our living room.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: \"Verdana\",\"sans-serif\";\">It\u2019s one of my fondest childhood memories and continues to be one of my all-time favorite films.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: \"Verdana\",\"sans-serif\";\">I still cringe when The Cowardly Lion first jumps out at Dorothy and Toto from behind the tree and I tear up when The-Great-and-Powerful-Oz presents him with a Badge of Courage.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/annahelizabeth.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Cowardly-Lion-2527s-Badge-of-Courage.jpg\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"210\" src=\"https:\/\/annahelizabeth.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Cowardly-Lion-2527s-Badge-of-Courage-300x197.jpg\" width=\"320\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: \"Verdana\",\"sans-serif\";\">And though they all were granted different things from the wizard that day, they all obtained one other special gift: Wisdom.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: \"Verdana\",\"sans-serif\";\">Wisdom is what comes out of our courage, it is the learning that evolves from the hard work of understanding what is behind our fears and our failures.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: \"Verdana\",\"sans-serif\";\">Many years ago I attended a team building workshop where we were all asked to share what we believed to be life\u2019s greatest assets.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: \"Verdana\",\"sans-serif\";\">The discussions and the giant board were filled with the biggies like: Love, Compassion, Patience, Honesty, and Integrity.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: \"Verdana\",\"sans-serif\";\">At the bottom of the long list was my little contribution.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\"><span style=\"font-family: \"Verdana\",\"sans-serif\";\">Courage<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-family: \"Verdana\",\"sans-serif\";\">.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: \"Verdana\",\"sans-serif\";\">We were then broken into groups and given an envelope of money upon which we had to purchase the trait we found held the most value.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: \"Verdana\",\"sans-serif\";\">What we didn\u2019t know was that the funds hadn\u2019t been distributed equitably.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: \"Verdana\",\"sans-serif\";\">My group had received a pauper\u2019s pittance while another group received more than twelve-thousand dollars.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: \"Verdana\",\"sans-serif\";\">When I attempted to circumvent the disparity by joining forces with other groups who had few funds, the leader nixed the idea, telling us we\u2019d later understand.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: \"Verdana\",\"sans-serif\";\">The bidding wars and the bartering began.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: \"Verdana\",\"sans-serif\";\">And do you know what happened?<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: \"Verdana\",\"sans-serif\";\">Of course all of the biggies were gobbled up first by the power-money people.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: \"Verdana\",\"sans-serif\";\">But as the groups discussed the remaining traits and the value of each, a little shift began to occur.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: \"Verdana\",\"sans-serif\";\">The most amazing and exhilarating and then humbling thing happened: My coworkers began to recognize the endless merits of that brave little word.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: \"Verdana\",\"sans-serif\";\"><span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>And then the biggest fight of the day ensued, with everyone hoping to secure <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">Courage<\/i>.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: \"Verdana\",\"sans-serif\";\">They were willing to give up everything they had for Courage.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: \"Verdana\",\"sans-serif\";\">And the ultimate message that our leader had alluded to? I don\u2019t recall for sure, but I believe that it had something to do with the fact that our greatest assets can\u2019t be bought, that we are born with them, and that they are meant to be shared with one another and with the world.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: \"Verdana\",\"sans-serif\";\">Amongst the items cluttering my desk are two smooth stones.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/annahelizabeth.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Wisdom-Stone.jpg\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"256\" src=\"https:\/\/annahelizabeth.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Wisdom-Stone-300x241.jpg\" width=\"320\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\">\ufeff<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: \"Verdana\",\"sans-serif\";\">In my repertoire of Mama\u2019s Mantras is this: \u201cEvery day of our lives we can learn something knew if your mind is open to it. It might be something as simple as a person\u2019s name, but it is something learned, nonetheless.\u201d<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: \"Verdana\",\"sans-serif\";\"><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/annahelizabeth.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Courage-Stone.jpg\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"230\" src=\"https:\/\/annahelizabeth.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Courage-Stone-300x216.jpg\" width=\"320\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\">\ufeff<\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: \"Verdana\",\"sans-serif\";\">One of the other quotes that I hope I infused into my kids\u2019 memory banks is this: \u201cWe don\u2019t grow during the good times. We learn about ourselves through our mistakes and our misfortunes.\u201d<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: \"Verdana\",\"sans-serif\";\">Today, Journeyers, just today I learned something new: We DO grow during the good times, too, it\u2019s just that the awakenings don\u2019t seem to be quite so pronounced as those that come from conflict\u2026<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: \"Verdana\",\"sans-serif\";\">Fortunately, I\u2019ve also always told my children, \u201cAdults make mistakes, too,\u201d so it won\u2019t be a huge jolt to their psyches when I tell them I was wrong.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: \"Verdana\",\"sans-serif\";\">I don\u2019t think I could be any more honored in this life than to have my children someday repeat those things to their children, even it is followed by, \u201cOh, God, I think I\u2019m turning into my mother\u2026.\u201d<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: \"Verdana\",\"sans-serif\";\">And speaking of kids\u2014you knew it was coming, right?\u2014I\u2019m about to unleash a few bragging rights\u2026<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: \"Verdana\",\"sans-serif\";\">What you don\u2019t know about my children is that Fave is a 2016 Olympic hopeful who has represented our great country in eleven international competitions.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: \"Verdana\",\"sans-serif\";\">His eleven-year career has covered many wins, with numerous hurdles and a few losses sprinkled in here and there.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: \"Verdana\",\"sans-serif\";\">Courage has allowed him to show up after each failure, to gain a little wisdom that will ultimately help him achieve his ultimate athletic dream, and to move him to try again.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: \"Verdana\",\"sans-serif\";\">Courage has also helped his siblings who have not only lived in the shadow of The Older Sibling, they have walked behind a brother who is often in the spotlight, frequently steals the show, and is perceived by them to be <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">famous<\/i>.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: \"Verdana\",\"sans-serif\";\">Courage has enabled them to carve their own paths, to stand tall and be seen for their own accomplishments.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: \"Verdana\",\"sans-serif\";\">All of our hearts were broken for Fave after a recent mishap at an event in Venezuela, a calamity that ended his hopes of a record-setting performance, precluded him from the podium, and the United States from some much needed team points. <o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: \"Verdana\",\"sans-serif\";\">Still reeling from that blow, but needing to insure his spot on the upcoming World Team wasn\u2019t lost to someone else in this last qualifier, he attended his sport\u2019s National event this past weekend.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: \"Verdana\",\"sans-serif\";\">Courage allowed him to not only get back up in front of his peers, but to achieve, to reclaim a bit of his confidence and to move forward with his dreams.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: \"Verdana\",\"sans-serif\";\">Courage allowed him to get back up and try again, after his first attempt failed.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: \"Verdana\",\"sans-serif\";\">Courage got us all through our bundles of nerves: Dad the coach, Little Brother who assisted, and me who videotaped, despite an urge to run away because I didn\u2019t think my heart could withstand the pressure of it all.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: \"Verdana\",\"sans-serif\";\">Little sister\u2019s boss watched with her from his office.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: \"Verdana\",\"sans-serif\";\">It was a little hairy, Journeyers, but he powered his way through to achieve, to rise above adversity.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: \"Verdana\",\"sans-serif\";\">\u201cI\u2019m so glad I came,\u201d he told me afterward, \u201cI didn\u2019t want to, but I\u2019m happy that I did.\u201d<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: \"Verdana\",\"sans-serif\";\"><o:p><\/o:p><\/span> <\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-bidi-font-family: \"Times New Roman\"; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-bidi; mso-fareast-font-family: PMingLiU; mso-fareast-language: ZH-TW; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-fareast;\">\u201cThere\u2019s a reason only a fraction of Olympic hopefuls reach the pinnacle of their careers,\u201d I said to him as we left him to return home, \u201ceverything has to be lined up just so.
