At the end of each summer we fill our kids\u2019 backpacks with love.<\/span><\/div>\n
Pencils.<\/span><\/div>\n
Healthy snacks.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
Brightly colored crayons.<\/span><\/div>\n
Their favorite cartoony folders.<\/span><\/div>\n
And we send them off to school.<\/span><\/div>\n
We carefully organize.<\/span><\/div>\n
We read the school\u2019s communications with fervor.<\/span><\/div>\n
And in a timely manner.<\/span><\/div>\n
And we write notes of thanks and gratitude and put smiley faces on the pages before we place that correspondence back into the \u201cReturn to School\u201d pocket.<\/span><\/div>\n
And then, somewhere along the way Life settles in.<\/span><\/div>\n
School projects and play dates and sports and birthday parties and work and discipline and bills and chaos and OH, MY!<\/span><\/div>\n
Christmas comes.<\/span><\/div>\n
And millions of Mamas and some Papas, too, agonize over finding the perfect gift for Suzie and Little Johnny and Grandma and Grandpa and Best Friend and Teacher.<\/span><\/div>\n
Now, I\u2019m one of those people who purchases Christmas gifts all year long, stashes them in closets and sometimes forgets This or That or Where I Put Them.<\/span><\/div>\n
Please don\u2019t run away, all you Last Minute Shoppers. I promise you\u2019ll be glad you stayed.<\/span><\/div>\n
When my oldest was in pre-k, I was so overwhelmed with Life that I forgot to think about the people who\u2019d go on to become some of the most important people in my children\u2019s lives, until it was too late.<\/span><\/div>\n
When I saw all those Prepared Parents showing up to the Classroom Christmas party with great big smiles on their faces and pretty bags that were adorned with PRETTIER BOWS.<\/span><\/div>\n
Yep. Epic Mama Fail.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
$*IT happens.<\/span><\/div>\n
Then we get over it, learn from it, and become Grade A Inspectors of all things appley<\/i> and teachery<\/i>.<\/span><\/div>\n
A homeroom mother who juggled three different classrooms at a time, I bore witness to the massive amounts of merchandise teachers receive, everything from The Chotzke to The Costly.<\/span><\/div>\n
I wondered: How many mugs can one teacher drink from and how many World\u2019s Best Teacher Sweaters can one person wear?<\/o:p><\/i><\/span><\/div>\n
And what does she do with all of these things when she or her classroom outgrows them?<\/span><\/i><\/div>\n
One of the discussions I heard over and over was how much money teachers spend out of pocket each year on supplies for their students.<\/span><\/div>\n
Incentives for their industrious understudies.<\/span><\/div>\n
Books for their bookworms.<\/span><\/div>\n
Stickers to share their satisfaction.<\/span><\/div>\n
Posters.<\/span><\/div>\n
Markers.<\/span><\/div>\n
Rulers.<\/span><\/div>\n
Resources for those families who don\u2019t have the means to stock those backpacks.<\/span><\/div>\n
About three years into my kids\u2019 schooling, I began buying a bunch of extra supplies when I made my July purchases.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
July through early September is THE BEST time to shop for all those things your teacher needs.<\/span><\/div>\n
And IT\u2019S ALL IN ONE PLACE.<\/span><\/div>\n
Every single grade level\u2019s necessities.<\/span><\/div>\n
Glue.<\/span><\/div>\n
Crayons.<\/span><\/div>\n
Pencils.<\/span><\/div>\n
Pens.<\/span><\/div>\n
Protractors and rulers and folders and calculators.<\/span><\/div>\n
In massive quantities.<\/span><\/div>\n
In every color.<\/span><\/div>\n
In every price range.<\/span><\/div>\n
And the supplies are ON SALE, which means you get a bargain and everyone else benefits.<\/span><\/div>\n
In the earlier elementary grades I hit the local dollar stores for pencils and stickers and erasers that have school themes.<\/span><\/div>\n
For the older classes I bought ink stamps and ink pads in various colors and topics.<\/span><\/div>\n
Book store and other party supply\/pizza gift certificates come in handy for all age groups.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
When Christmas came, I placed all of those items into the prettiest gift bag I had and smiled as my child presented his teacher with a gift she wouldn\u2019t feel bad about breaking or giving away\u2026<\/span><\/div>\n
These days it\u2019s even easier to shop for your child\u2019s supplies as many stores post lists of what each instructor requires.<\/span><\/div>\n
And if your child needs it, so does your teacher.<\/span><\/div>\n

Last year I rounded up all of the loose containers of used\/broken\/flattened crayons and colored pencils and glue sticks and folders (etc) that my kids haven\u2019t used in years.<\/span><\/div>\n
I almost threw them out, but phoned the second grade teacher who taught all three of my cherubs.<\/span><\/div>\n
She said it felt like Christmas times two and then had the entire class write me thank you notes. <\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
Hit the ground running by having your student help pick out the items you\u2019re going to include in a Christmas bag or basket.<\/span><\/div>\n
You\u2019ll be saving time and money and preparing your child for life and the classroom by sharing with them the value of a different kind of thoughtfulness.<\/span><\/div>\n
You win.<\/span><\/div>\n
Your children win.<\/span><\/div>\n
Your educators win.<\/span><\/div>\n
