<\/span><\/p>\n

For what ails me.<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

And I\u2019m so glad that this past week of <\/span>Mad<\/span><\/a> and <\/span>Sad<\/span><\/a> is over.<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Some weeks are that way, where The Shit seems to flourish.<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

That seemingly eternal anguish makes me all the more appreciative for those times like Mother\u2019s Day week, <\/span>when I noticed plenty of Happy<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Honestly, until Friday, I thought I was going to have to pull this entry from my photo gallery\u2026<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

But, then\u2026Happy happened\u2026<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/a> <\/a><\/div>\n
<\/o:p><\/span><\/span> <\/div>\n
<\/a><\/div>\n
My perennials survived<\/i><\/b> last week\u2019s frost that killed my newly purchased hanging baskets<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/span> <\/div>\n
<\/a><\/div>\n
One of Beauty\u2019s college roommates was throwing this out.<\/span><\/div>\n
She rescued Prada purse\/backpack for Moi!<\/i><\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/em> <\/div>\n
<\/a><\/div>\n
An impromptu trip to Niagara, after Big Guy\u2019s Saturday tournament.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/a><\/div>\n
Family togetherness, nature\u2019s endless beauty, and pure relaxation\u2026<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/a><\/a><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
And then today, the day I\u2019ve been training for since November, when I had this idea that I wanted to do something big before my upcoming 50th<\/span><\/sup>birthday.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
I wanted to try something I\u2019ve never done before, just to say I could and did do it.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
I\u2019ve been walking for exercise for several years now, but I haven\u2019t run since I was in high school.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
When I ran with plastic bags over me and long sweatpants in the middle of a southern summer.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
Running because my sister had discovered my Bulimia secret and told my mom, who\u2019d begged me to stop.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
Running because I some extremely misguided notion that I was fat.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
And I feared becoming fatter.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
Fast forward to my adult years and I couldn\u2019t run more than thirty seconds without feeling like my lungs were going to implode.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
But last October that all changed when I saw a friend\u2019s post about the c25k app she\u2019d started using.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
My gung-ho spirit lasted about two weeks before I shelved it.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
Where it sat for a month, until a friend asked me to help her lose weight. \u201cI can only do it with you,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
Here\u2019s how that works: She loses weight. I gain what she sheds.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
Every time.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
Nonetheless, I told her about the training program, and my dream was reborn.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
My first 5K.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
My enthusiasm must have been infectious because, before I knew it, I had five other people saying they were going to do it with us.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
I had my own little team of dreamers.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
\u201cLet\u2019s call ourselves The Believers,\u201d I said. \u201cWe can put, \u2018I Believe\u2019 on the back of the shirts.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
Despite a surgery setback in the fourth month, and the loss of four weeks of running, I forged ahead with a modified plan.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
Even after my little band of enthusiasts began fading away.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
Believing my friends were the ones that had kept me going, I almost abandoned my own vision.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
Until I remembered why I had started in the first place: To do something amazing. For myself.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
Beauty agreed to join me with a target of finishing better than her first ever 5k time that she set last week during her college\u2019s run.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
My objective was to finish in under an hour.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
Warren and Big Guy, who had three soccer games this weekend and is dealing with a knee injury, joined us by volunteering.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/a><\/div>\n
Young, old, women, men, women, and this adorable gal gathered at the event site.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The throngs of people moved forward when the whistle blew, and we were off.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
As the masses raced ahead of me, I focused on my breathing and willed my girl a successful run. \u201cGo Beauty, go,\u201d I thought several times.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
Somewhere shortly before the one mile mark, the leaders passed me on their returning pass.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
I found myself clapping and cheering as they flew by.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
One leg of the run meandered through a residential neighborhood where countless residents sat on their porches to watch and root for us runners.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/a><\/span><\/div>\n
I became emotional as the full impact of a community\u2019s involvement came into focus.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
Police officers, emergency personal, and people of every race, religion, and sexual orientation joined together for one cause.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
To help cure cancer.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Several families passed me by, babies sound asleep in strollers, elementary-aged children running side by side with adults.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The minute before I could collect my camera, I watched this mother jogging while carrying her daughter on her back.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
For a moment, I wished I had a partner to keep me moving, to keep me inspired.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
And then it dawned on me.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
I had nearly a thousand supporters.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
My nostalgia turned to an overwhelming sense of joy as I approached this group of cheerleaders.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/a><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cHalfway there!!\u201d they shouted. \u201cYou<\/b> are the cure! You<\/b> are the cure!\u201d <\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
My eyes welled with tears and a lump stuck in my throat.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
I am one person in a collective body that is<\/em> The Cure.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
One person at a time, we are making a difference<\/em>.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
I <\/i>amthe cure<\/i>, I thought as I struggled not to cry. <\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
I <\/i>amThe Cure<\/i>.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
Each one of us is The Cure for our individual calamity, for our community, and for whatever cause we choose to support.<\/span><\/div>\n

In whatever capacity we can confer.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
It takes a global village.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
I headed over to the volunteer station to find Warren, who was speaking with an elderly woman who was looking for the Survivor\u2019s Tent.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
I offered to help her locate it.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
As I led her to find this exhibition area, I found out that she is ninety-two years old.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
And a breast cancer survivor of fifty-one years.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
After the event, we headed on over to the last athletic contest of the weekend.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
I couldn\u2019t help but notice the few Dandelion seeds that rose above the freshly mowed fields.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
I smiled as I remembered the childhood amusement of making wishes on the wafting strands.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/a><\/div>\n
Make a wish…<\/span><\/div>\n
Make it Happen…<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
And tonight, as I prepared the photos for this piece, I couldn\u2019t help but notice how my runner\u2019s bib pulled it all together.<\/span><\/div>\n

One of the Susan G. Komen Foundations mottos is: I AM THE CURE.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
They believe it, too\u2026<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
I am The Cure, not just in my breast health, but in all of my life\u2019s encounters<\/b>.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
