{"id":379598,"date":"2013-02-27T02:22:00","date_gmt":"2013-02-27T02:22:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/staging.annahelizabeth.com\/index.php\/2013\/02\/27\/parents-of-well-behaved-children-rewarded-good-or-bad-practice\/"},"modified":"2013-02-27T02:22:00","modified_gmt":"2013-02-27T02:22:00","slug":"parents-of-well-behaved-children-rewarded-good-or-bad-practice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging.annahelizabeth.com\/index.php\/2013\/02\/27\/parents-of-well-behaved-children-rewarded-good-or-bad-practice\/","title":{"rendered":"Parents of Well-Behaved Children Rewarded &#8211; Good or Bad Practice?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">I recently stumbled across <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">Circle of Mom\u2019s<\/i> blog entry about a<span style=\"color: #ea9999;\"> <\/span><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/moms.popsugar.com\/Restaurant-Offers-Well-Behaved-Children-Discount-27335732\"><span style=\"color: #ea9999; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">restaurant discount one family received because their children were well-behaved<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">.<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">The comment boards were lit up with parents and non-parents, alike, arguing both sides of whether or not this bill reduction is fair and\/or moral.<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">As of this writing, the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/moms.popsugar.com\/Restaurant-Offers-Well-Behaved-Children-Discount-27335732\"><span style=\"color: #ea9999; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">HuffingtonPost piece that originated the discussion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"> had 732 responses.<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">One of the first remarks drawing my attention was in the writer\u2019s approach to the subject:<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<table cellpadding=\"0\" cellspacing=\"0\" style=\"width: 100%px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">   <\/span><\/p>\n<tbody><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<tr><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">    <\/span><\/p>\n<td style=\"background-color: transparent; border: rgb(0, 0, 0);\">\n<div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">&#8220;In this instance,     we wonder how much coloring was done before the meal? <\/i><i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">Were there iPhones at     the table? Did they get all-you-can-eat buttered pasta from the first     moment of the meal? Was there any food on the floor at the end at all?&#8221;<\/i><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><\/span><br \/><b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">Children can be seen (and heard) in public in pleasing ways.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/b><br \/><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">It\u2019s as if the author(s) feels that children cannot be in public\u2014without some form of bribery\u2014without creating spectacles of themselves and their parents.<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">Honestly, I find this theory objectionable and demeaning to responsible adults everywhere.<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">On two separate occasions when our three were young (roughly aging between two and ten), people near us acknowledged our well-behaved children\u2019s actions with gifts.<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">An elderly Applebee\u2019s patron had the waitress ask us if she could purchase the little ones at our table dessert. And then, as she left, she paused at our table to inform Warren, me, and especially our children how much she enjoyed sitting near us\u2014a <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">rarity<\/i>\u2014she said, to see such delightful young children in public. <\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">There might have been crayons and a themed coloring page at the restaurant.<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">But there were also these two things: Conversation with, and Interest in our children.<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">I must admit that Hubby and I were pleased and perplexed.<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">Isn\u2019t this what our children are <\/i>supposed<i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\"> to be doing<\/i>?<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">The second time we were at the baseball park when someone a row or two behind us asked if they could give each of our cherubs a dollar to buy a treat, telling us all how much joy she felt watching the little ones enjoy the game in such mature and respectful ways.<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">I can assure you there were no phones or copious quantities of pasta (or popcorn) in either instance.<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">Were they perfect every time we went out to eat?<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">Absolutely not.<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">But did we remind them of our expectations?<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">You <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">betcha.<\/i><\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">Did they know we wouldn\u2019t tolerate rowdy, rude, or disrespectful behavior?<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">Yes <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">sirree<\/i>.<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">Respect and responsibility begin at home.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/b><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">Numerous comments addressed the fact that good behavior begins at home.<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">It\u2019s modeled.<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">From the time my children could begin asking for things, we taught, encouraged\u2014and, yes, expected\u2014them to use their words, versus pointing and grunting.<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">I experienced a brief uncertainty about requiring them to say <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">please<\/i> and <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">thank you<\/i> when they needed a drink or a snack or help removing a toy from the shelf. After all, they can\u2019t reach the beverages and bowls and we didn\u2019t allow our toddlers to climb cabinets.<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">This is what went through my head: I\u2019m the mom and it\u2019s my duty to take care of them, right?<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">I quickly dismissed that doubt.<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">Even adults ask nicely (at least we should) for help and are gracious to those who provide assistance or act in positive ways.<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">It is role-played.<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">A friend of mine once commented that she liked the way I always seemed to provide examples for my children by offering relevant phrases, stories, or scenarios for encounters they were facing.<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">Quick illustrations help our children prepare for events, they teach them that alternative solutions exist, but most importantly, they stimulate discussion and help the child feel important, empowered and a little better prepared for what might come.<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">There\u2019s a difference between disruptive and disorderly behavior.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/b><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">Countless parents of children with disabilities commented on the post.<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">Of the comments I read, several argued that the discount was unfair because of the challenges they faced with their children.<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">All parents face trying times of varying degrees.<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">I don\u2019t feel that discouraging people from going out helps them. You know that old adage, \u201cPractice makes perfect?\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">Perfection doesn\u2019t exist, but practice is what builds patterns of behavior.<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">And there is a clear distinction between <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">disruptive<\/i> and <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">disorderly<\/i> behavior.<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">Disruptive children are those who announce a little too loudly that they have to go pee a dozen times during the meal.<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">Warren and I once had an embarrassing situation where one of our little cherubs decided he couldn\u2019t wipe himself after going Number Two at a restaurant.<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">He\u2019d said he had to go Number One and wanted to do it all by himself. We had been seated right outside the restroom, so Warren returned to the table, thinking he was helping build independence and self-esteem.<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">No one was more embarrassed than we were to hear our little guy shout at the top of his lungs, \u201cMommy! Daddy! I went POOPIE. I went pooooopeeee!! Daddy, will you come wipe my butt?\u201d<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">Definitely a teaching moment in the making&#8230;<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">Disruptive is the infant who has suddenly learned that flying spoons make adults laugh and say, \u201cOh, look, he learned something new!\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">And then we play fetch.<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">Over and over.<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">Until about the twenty-fifth time, when our stomachs are growling, our food is cold, we\u2019ve decided bending over is tedious, and apologizing to the table behind us is no longer funny.<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">Disruptive behavior can be a little loud on the ears of those who just want to chill after a hard day\u2019s work or simply enjoy a quiet night out.<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">Disorderly behavior, on the other hand, can be described as riotous\/uncontrollable\/rebellious or undisciplined.<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">Disorderly kids are those who jump up and down on the bench seats, those who are old enough to know throwing spoons (with or without food in them) isn\u2019t acceptable, but they do it anyway.<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">They are the children who scream and yell at their parents \u201cNo!\u201d or \u201c<i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">You<\/i> shut up!\u201d or \u201cI don\u2019t have to!\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">I once took a picture (just for this type of article. But it appears I deleted it) of two teenage boys who were lounging in a booth, feet outstretched into the aisle. They were playing music and games on their phones, using profanity, and not paying a bit of attention to anyone around them.<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">A waitress had to ask them to sit up so that a couple could walk past them. I exaggerate not.<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">As it turns out, the parents were sitting at another table paying absolutely no attention to the adolescents.<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">The behavior\u2014of the parents and the kids\u2014was nothing short of rude and inconsiderate.<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">Disadvantage does not excuse discourteous behavior<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/b><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">I know nothing of those two boys. They could very well have had ADHD diagnoses, and the music and games were the distractions they needed to act in a somewhat orderly manner.<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">However, if that were so, the parents should have been there role modeling and role playing even better behavior.<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">I wasn\u2019t the only patron scowling at these young people, who came across as nothing less than punks.<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">Neither the adults nor the adolescents were being considerate of the others of us who were also trying to enjoy a meal out.<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt; tab-stops: 561.0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">My experiences reflect a community who are understanding of disruptive behaviors when the parents are making a conscious effort to teach appropriate behavior and are mindful of those around them.<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt; tab-stops: 561.0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">Taking young children to a restaurant known for romance or fine dining also puts parents at a different sort of disadvantage. In such cases, the expectation would be that the children would not create disruption for the guests around them.<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt; tab-stops: 561.0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">I\u2019ve seen families ask for the check and quietly, but firmly, tell an ill-behaving child they are leaving.
