Just like I do every September, I purchased a bag of tulip bulbs for fall planting.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
Just like I do every year, I failed to place them in the ground before it began to harden from evening frosts.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
And just like every Autumn I can recall, there is always an Indian-Summer day or two.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
I was sure I had lost my last window of opportunity when the nights began dipping into the teens and I woke to heavy layer of ice on my windshield.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
Every time I saw the bag of bulbs in the mud room, I felt a twinge of sadness, because the red squirrels or chipmunks had dug up most of the other underground pieces.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
There is nothing like the bright flashes of early spring color to chase away the winter blues that settle like frost into my being.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
But December had a surprise for me and last Monday I spent an hour on my knees digging furiously in the damp soil.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
You know what they say. You reap what you sow.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
In one hour I sowed two sets of smiles\u2014one for this week and several for the coming spring.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
